How to check for hidden cameras

Protecting your personal privacy from the perverts of the world is more of a worry today than it has been in past years. This may be due to the ever increasing volume of options as well as the availability of hidden cameras. Hidden cameras that come disguised as every day items are the best known but hidden cameras can also come in the form of tiny pinhole cameras.

When you first go to move into your newly rented apartment, room or home, you need to do a complete and thorough walk through while paying close attention to all of the little things. This is especially true if the place comes fully or even partially furnished.

When you do your initial inspection you need to check the following very carefully:

• Check the bathroom very carefully while paying close attention to the shower and toilet areas.
• All the corners of each room, be sure to check the ceiling for small holes and this goes especially for the walls to any adjoining apartments.
• All of the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors.
• Any wall decorations, paintings or mirrors you don't install yourself.
• Air conditioning and heating air vents.

What you should be looking for, are wires that appear out of place and seem to go no where,  and small holes that make no sense. If you turn out all of the lights and get it as dark as you can in your place you can look for small lights in odd places.

Most modern cameras come with some type of power on light that can be much more easily seen in the pitch dark. As I mentioned before you need to pay very close attention as you do your initial inspection.

The bad thing about apartments and rented homes is that the landlord can come in under false pretenses and then install cameras at any time after you move in. So you may also want to consider buying yourself a portable bug detector.

Bug detectors can allow you to sweep an area in search of various wired and/or wireless cameras and even microphones. The best thing of all is that you can occasionally re-sweep your living area to be sure nothing gets slipped in after your initial inspection.

Another bonus to getting yourself a bug detector is that it can be used to ensure your privacy in dressing rooms and public bathrooms as well.

We have all seen the news stories of perverts placing cameras in public places and you don't want to be victimized. A little prevention can save you a lot of  heartache and misery down the road.
